Northern Europe Energy Group (Northern Energy) is pleased to announce a strategic partnership with Magnora, which has joined as the majority owner of a cutting-edge data center project in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Magnora now holds a 70% stake in the project, with Northern Energy retaining a 30% share. The collaboration aims to develop a high-density, AI-ready 120 MW data center facility, with plans for the site to reach Ready-to-Build status by the end of 2026.
The project is designed to support the growing demand for digital infrastructure, leveraging the region’s exceptional physical and logistical conditions. The site spans 150,000 m², zoned for data center operations, and benefits from key attributes including access to a district heating network for waste-heat recovery, proximity to all major Finnish fiber operators, stable ground conditions, and a location just under one kilometer from the nearest electrical substation.
Geographically, the data center will be situated in Hämeenlinna, strategically positioned between Helsinki and Tampere. The site is within a 1.5-hour drive of more than 4 million people, including a large pool of highly skilled technical professionals. Furthermore, it enjoys easy access to international airports, enhancing its connectivity for global enterprises.
"This partnership marks a significant milestone for Northern Energy as we collaborate with Magnora and the City of Hämeenlinna," said Tor Arne Pedersen, Chairman of Northern Energy. "Magnora’s financial strength and industrial experience, combined with Northern Energy’s local expertise and strong municipal support, provide a robust foundation for delivering a large-scale, sustainable data center. This project is a strategic step in Northern Energy's broader vision to create a valuable portfolio of energy transition and digital infrastructure projects across Northern Europe."
In addition to the Finland-based data center project, Northern Energy is also moving forward with a significant renewable energy initiative in Latvia through its daughter company, CIS Liepaja. This EUR 550 million project, located in the Liepaja Special Economic Zone, aims to create a state-of-the-art renewable energy complex, including a hydrogen production facility. With plans to produce around 150,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually by 2030, the project will support Europe's transition to a carbon-neutral economy. A substantial portion of the hydrogen produced will be exported to Germany and other EU nations, strengthening energy independence and supporting the decarbonization goals of the region. The project will also create over 100 new jobs, boost economic activity in the Liepaja region, and foster significant industrial transformation. In a recent development, CIS Liepaja signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Vindr Latvia to secure long-term renewable energy supply for the green hydrogen facility, ensuring the stability of the project’s energy needs.
Northern Energy initiated the Hämeenlinna project in 2025, and Magnora’s majority stake in the project through the joint venture solidifies its position as a key player in the rapidly expanding data center sector. Magnora’s expertise will drive the project's strategic, industrial, and financial success, enabling the facility to adapt to customer demand and become an integral part of the global digital infrastructure network.
